When the power of the lens is relatively low, normal index single vision stock lenses can be used. For minimal edge thickness, the lenses may need to be especially ground. One may then choose to use a normal index material with the normal (spherical) design, or for a small additional cost, one may use a higher index material with an aspheric design. The latter choice will lead to a thinner and lighter lens.
